Ram TRX MPG: What the Official Ratings Say and What They Do Not
Fuel economy is the first practical question about a 702 hp supercharged truck, and it is also the number most often quoted without a source. Here is where the official figures come from, how to check them yourself, and why the 2027 truck has no rating to quote yet.

Ask a room full of TRX owners what the truck gets and you will hear five different numbers, most of them remembered wrong, some of them for the wrong model year, and at least one that is actually the tow rating. This page will not add a sixth guess. Here is what the EPA rating actually is, how to pull the real number for your exact model year in under a minute, and why anyone quoting a figure for the 2027 Ram 1500 SRT TRX right now is making it up.
What the EPA rating actually is
The EPA fuel economy label is a result of a standardized dynamometer test cycle, not a promise about your driving. The truck (or an identical test vehicle for that configuration) runs a scripted city and highway cycle in a lab, and the numbers on the window sticker come out the other end. It is a comparison tool the government requires so a Ram 1500 TRX and a Ford F-150 Raptor can be measured on the same yardstick. That is genuinely useful. It is not a forecast of what you will see on your commute.
On a heavy, supercharged 4x4 with an eight-speed automatic and all-terrain tires, the gap between the test cycle and real driving tends to run wider than it does on an ordinary half-ton, for reasons the test cycle simply does not capture: sustained highway speed above the cycle's assumptions, cold starts in winter, a lift kit and larger tires changing rolling resistance, and a right foot that finds the throttle on a 702 hp truck more often than it does on a base Tradesman. None of that is a flaw in the test. It just means the sticker number is a starting point, not a ceiling or a floor.
Why we are not printing a number here
We could quote a figure from memory and it would probably look right to most readers. That is exactly the problem: "probably right" is not a standard this site runs on, and a wrong EPA number that gets repeated on forums for the next three years is worse than no number at all. The EPA rating for a given model year, trim, and drivetrain configuration is a matter of public record, published by the government, and it takes less time to look up than it took to read this paragraph.
How to check it yourself in about 30 seconds
- Go to fueleconomy.gov, the EPA's own fuel economy site.
- Use the "Find a Car" or "Find & Compare Cars" tool and search "Ram 1500 TRX."
- Select the exact model year you own or are shopping. The EPA lists ratings by model year, and configurations can change between years even when the badge does not.
- Read the city, highway, and combined numbers directly off the government page, not off a forum screenshot of it.
That is the honest version of "what does a TRX get": the number that is currently on file for your specific model year, straight from the source that generates it, checked at the moment you need it rather than trusted from memory.
Does the model year change the rating?
It can. The Ram 1500 TRX ran from December 2020 through February 2024 production, all of it with the same 6.2L supercharged HEMI making 702 hp and 650 lb-ft, but EPA ratings are certified and published per model year, and running changes to gearing, tire specification, or emissions equipment can move the number without changing the badge on the tailgate. Do not assume a 2021 and a 2024 carry an identical rating just because the powertrain spec looks the same on paper. Check the model year you actually own.
What actually moves your fuel consumption on this truck
None of the following comes with a number attached, because none of it should. These are the variables that push your real-world consumption around, in the direction they push it:
- Weight. This is a heavy truck with a supercharger sitting in the V of the engine, which takes more energy to accelerate than a lighter half-ton, full stop. We are not going to quote a curb weight figure here because it is not in this site's verified spec sheet for either generation and it varies by cab configuration and options anyway; check the door-jamb sticker or window sticker for your own truck's actual number. Every additional pound in the bed or the cab (a topper, a full tank of water, a family of five) adds to that.
- Aerodynamics. The TRX's ride height, wide fender flares, and upright grille are good for ground clearance and terrible for a drag coefficient. Highway consumption suffers more from this than city driving does, which is the opposite of what most owners expect.
- The supercharger. The blower is belt-driven off the crank and spins essentially all the time the engine is running, not just when you are into the throttle. It is part of why this engine does not idle as cheaply as a naturally aspirated V8 of similar displacement.
- Tires. Larger, more aggressive all-terrain or mud-terrain tires increase rolling resistance and change the effective gearing versus stock. A tire swap alone can move your observed number without anything else on the truck changing.
- Throttle input. This is the biggest lever an owner actually controls. A 702 hp truck (777 hp on the 2027 SRT TRX) makes it very easy to use throttle inputs that a normal half-ton owner never would, and the supercharger rewards a heavy foot with consumption that has nothing to do with the EPA cycle.
- Load and tow. Towing near the TRX's 8,100 lb max or running close to the 1,310 lb payload limit changes the picture more than any bolt-on part will. A loaded truck at highway speed is not driving the same test the EPA ran.

The 2027 SRT TRX has no EPA rating to quote
The Ram 1500 SRT TRX started production on August 3, 2026, and has been in customer hands for a matter of weeks as of this writing. Carrying over a 2021-2024 TRX figure to the 2027 truck would be wrong even if we had one to carry, because the 2027 truck is a different certified configuration: 777 hp and 680 lb-ft versus 702 hp and 650 lb-ft, a 75 hp and 30 lb-ft jump from the same 6.2L supercharged HEMI. More power from the same displacement, at the same or greater weight, does not tend to help a fuel economy number, but "does not tend to help" is a qualitative read, not a substitute for the certified rating. How to turn your own number into a cost per mile
Once you have driven your truck enough to have an honest observed average (your dash's instantaneous readout is not that; your fill-up math over a few tanks is), the math that actually matters to your budget is simple:
- Track total miles driven between two fill-ups where you filled the tank completely both times.
- Track gallons added at the second fill-up.
- Divide miles by gallons to get your real observed MPG for that stretch of driving.
- Divide your local price per gallon by that MPG figure to get your cost per mile.
Run that same math again after a tire change, a tune, or a long tow, and you will see your own truck's real sensitivity to those variables far more usefully than any EPA sticker number or forum-quoted average ever will. It is also the only fuel economy number on this page we would ever ask you to trust, because it is yours.
The short version
